Tips to Stay Strong and Healthy This Fall

Fall is here, which means cooler weather, warm sweaters, and of course everything pumpkin spice. It’s also a time to make sure you stay motivated and maintain your healthy habits. The good news is, there are many ways to keep you healthy mentally and physically. With fall being a popular time to travel around the country, it’s important to know how to keep your health in top shape while still being able to enjoy your trip. Here are eight ways to stay healthy during those autumn months.

Drink Plenty of Water

A no-brainer in the summer, but it’s just as important to stay hydrated in the fall. Although you may not always feel like you need to drink water in the cooler months, it’s still crucial to keep your body running at its best. To help you drink more water, get yourself a large water bottle that you can carry with you. Something that is at least 32 ounces is best. The more water you consume, the better!

Maintain Your Sleep Schedule

Good sleep is critical to your body’s restoration process, so make it a priority! Get into a bedtime routine by choosing consistent times to fall asleep and wake up. It’s also helpful to turn off your electronics before bed. Instead of scrolling through social media, try reading a book to help slow your mind down before you go to sleep. Make sure to also avoid caffeine in the evenings. This will allow your body to calm down for the evening so you can sleep peacefully.

Stay Active

As the weather turns cold, it’s tempting to go into hibernation. Don’t lose motivation. Keep moving! Switch up your exercise routine to keep things interesting. Physical exercise is one of the best ways to help you feel happy, energized and less stressed. Ask a friend to be your workout buddy and help keep each other motivated and accountable!

Eat Foods That Are in Season

Choose produce that is in season such as pumpkins, apples, beets, squash and brussels sprouts. These fruits and veggies are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that will keep your immune system strong during the start of flu season. A great way to ensure you get these yummy foods on your plate while they’re in season is to visit local farmers’ markets. Their foods will be extra fresh and grown with care. It’s also an easy way to support your local farmers and community!

Take some time for yourself

Autumn and winter are the Earth’s way of telling us to slow down. Journaling, reading or exploring a new hobby is a great way to take time for yourself and stay intact with your mental health. Another great way to take time for yourself is to step outside and breathe in the fall air. Meditating or practicing yoga is a wonderful stress reliever and another option for working on your mental health.

Moisturize Your Skin

Colder weather can cause a lot of stress to your skin. Harsh changes in temperature can make it feel dry and uncomfortable. Find a moisturizer that fits your skin best and don’t forget to keep applying your sunscreen. Just because summer is over, does not mean UV rays won’t damage your skin!

Do Some “Spring Cleaning” in the Fall

Clean out your closet, organize that back room, and rid yourself of things you don’t need. Cleaning your home will help you feel new and refreshed, and you can even donate your unwanted items to any donation center near you! Spring cleaning in the fall doesn’t just mean organizing the physical space around you, it can also mean clearing out your headspace mentally. Let go of negativity or any past events you may be holding on to and keep your mind feeling positive and healthy!

Schedule Your Regular Checks-Ups

Having regular health screenings is a vital way to ensure that you are staying healthy through the colder months. These appointments are an opportunity to talk to your doctors about any health concerns you may have before heading into the winter. Get a flu shot, build a balanced diet, check in with your mental health, and practice basic hygiene and self-care to keep yourself and your family healthy this fall.
