Travel nursing FAQs

What are travel nursing jobs?

Travel nursing lets APRNs, RNs, and LPNs work at different facilities nationwide on short-term assignments, typically lasting between 4–13 weeks. These roles often come with competitive pay and the chance to build skills while seeing new places.

How do you become a travel nurse?

To become a travel nurse, you’ll first need to complete an accredited nursing program, earn your license by passing the NCLEX‑RN exam, and meet any required certifications such as BLS (and others depending on your specialty). While a BSN degree can open the door to more opportunities, it isn’t always required for travel assignments.

Once licensed, you can begin applying for travel nursing jobs across the country. To work with Favorite, you’ll need at least one year of recent experience as an APRN, RN, LPN, or LVN. Prior travel nursing experience is not required, making it an excellent option for nurses looking to expand their skills and take on new challenges.

Can I work as a travel nurse close to home?

Yes! Local contract nursing offers the flexibility of contract work without relocating. You can pick up assignments at nearby hospitals or clinics, build new skills, and manage a schedule that supports your work life balance.

How is pay structured for travel assignments?

Pay for travel nurses usually includes a taxable hourly wage along with a weekly, tax-free stipend to help cover housing, meals, and other expenses. Most assignments pay weekly, though some may follow a biweekly schedule, and many travelers can also access DailyPay for earlier wage availability.

What support will I receive during my travel assignment?

You’ll have ongoing support from your recruiter throughout your assignment. They’ll check in regularly, help with scheduling questions, and make sure you have everything you need for a smooth and successful experience.
