What does an IR tech do?
Interventional radiology technologists — also called IR techs — are specialized radiologic professionals who assist physicians in performing minimally invasive, image-guided procedures. IR techs help physicians with procedures that guide instruments through a patient's blood vessels and organs, setting up sterile equipment trays, positioning patients correctly, helping operate fluoroscopic equipment, and capturing diagnostic images.
Core day-to-day responsibilities of an IR tech include:
- Preparing and maintaining sterile procedure fields and specialized IR equipment
- Positioning patients and administering contrast agents for image-guided procedures
- Operating fluoroscopy, angiography, and digital subtraction equipment during procedures
- Assisting physicians with procedures including angioplasty, stent placement, embolization, biopsies, and drain placements
- Monitoring patients during procedures and communicating changes to the clinical team
- Documenting procedures accurately and ensuring radiation safety protocols are followed
- Collaborating with interventional radiologists, nurses, and vascular surgeons in a procedural suite environment
What is the difference between an IR tech and a rad tech?
A radiologic technologist (rad tech) is a generalist credential covering X-ray imaging. An interventional radiology technologist is a specialist who assists physicians with minimally invasive, image-guided procedures in an IR suite, requiring additional ARRT post-primary certification in Cardiovascular-Interventional (CV) or Vascular-Interventional (VI) radiography. IR tech roles are more procedurally focused and typically command higher pay than general rad tech positions.
What settings do IR techs work in?
IR techs work primarily in hospital interventional radiology suites and catheterization labs, but also in outpatient vascular surgery centers, hybrid operating rooms, and academic medical centers. Hospitals employ 58% of all radiologic technologists, making them the most common work environment, while physician offices account for another 19% and outpatient care centers 7%.
