What does a CT technologist do?

CT technologists, also called CT techs or computed tomography technologists, are allied health professionals who operate computed tomography (CT) scanning equipment to produce detailed cross-sectional images of patients' bodies. These images help physicians diagnose injuries, diseases, and medical conditions ranging from cancer and internal bleeding to musculoskeletal disorders.

Core responsibilities of a CT tech include:

  • Preparing and positioning patients for CT scans, including explaining procedures and addressing patient concerns
  • Operating CT imaging equipment and adjusting technical settings to produce clear, diagnostic-quality images
  • Administering contrast agents (dye) intravenously when required and monitoring patients for adverse reactions
  • Reviewing images for quality and ensuring they meet the radiologist's diagnostic requirements
  • Maintaining and calibrating CT equipment in line with radiation safety standards
  • Documenting procedures accurately and communicating findings to the supervising radiologist
  • Working across settings including hospitals, outpatient imaging centers, trauma centers, and specialized clinics

What are CT tech requirements and certifications?

Most CT tech jobs require the following qualifications:

  • An associate's or bachelor's degree in radiologic technology or a related imaging field from an accredited program
  • ARRT certification in Radiography (R) — required by most facilities as a baseline
  • ARRT post-primary certification in Computed Tomography (CT) — the key specialist credential for CT roles
