Joint Commission and Patient Safety: Sentinel Event Alert

Please review and follow risk reduction procedures at your assigned facilities
The Joint Commission issued a new Sentinel Event Alert for the prevention of accidents and injuries in the MRI suite. Over 10 million MRI scans are done annually in the U.S. While the benefits of MRI scans are well known, the inherent dangers are not. Possible MRI injuries include those caused by projectiles, dislodged implants, burns from heated surfaces, device malfunction, unattended patient support systems, and other adverse events. It is critical that all associates of Favorite take time to become aware of the potential dangers and follow appropriate procedures to assure patient safety.
Please ensure that you review and follow risk reduction procedures implemented at your assigned facilities.
Visit the Joint Commission website to read more about this important Alert, as well as previously released Sentinel Event Alerts.

Celebrating one of our Favorites!

Barbara Fobare, Detroit Recruiter, receives Kudos from RN, Michelle Lindemyer
We know that our branch associates and healthcare professionals are the best in the industry. However, it's especially nice when they share their appreciation for one another!
Michelle Lindemyer, a Favorite Nurse in Detroit, shared the following message with our branch recruiter, Barbara Fobare:
I just wanted to send you a personal letter to say thank you for introducing me to the different opportunities with Favorite. I find myself having more energy, excitement, and optimism in my career. I have struggled for a long time to find my calling. If I had not answered that newspaper ad in September of 2007, I might still carry that negative attitude about my career. Every day, I am proud to say I am a nurse. I tell everyone I meet about the wonderful opportunities that you and Favorite have to offer. Again, I just wanted to say thank you for showing me a different path in my career. You truly have been my inspiration, and I cannot begin to tell you how much I appreciate everything you have done for me.
You are the Best,
Michelle Lindemyer
Thank you, Michelle, for sharing your thoughts and experiences! Thank you, Barbara, for the kind, caring and committed service you provide to all of our healthcare professionals! And to both of you, thank you for choosing to be part of the Favorite Family!

April Fools!

Pranks, Gags, and Goofs!
The origin of April Fool's Day, also known as All Fool's Day, is not entirely clear, but the commonly-held belief involves changes in the calendar. At one time, New Year celebrations began on March 25th and ended on April 1st. When King Charles IX adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1582, however, January 1st became the first day of each new year.
In the Dark Ages, news traveled slowly, so those who were unaware of the change or who refused to acknowledge the new calendar were sent on "fool's errands," tricked into believing false information or accepting invitations to nonexistent "New Year's" parties on April 1st. In France, the butt of such a prank was known as a "poisson d'avril" or "April fish," which is an easily caught, young fish. Even today, French children sometimes tape fish pictures on a classmate's back, crying "Poisson d'Avril" when the prank is discovered.
April Fool's Day practical jokes continue to be commonly practiced and enjoyed. Although pranks are often quick and simple jokes, friends and relatives sometimes design elaborate practical jokes that last the entire day! Not even the news media is exempt! One of the most notorious pranks was played by the BBC on its viewers on an April Fool's Day by airing a fairly detailed documentary about "spaghetti farmers" harvesting their crop from their spaghetti trees. The BBC network was deluged by calls from viewers asking how they could get their very own spaghetti tree.
This April 1st, be wary of anyone who sends you on an errand for elbow grease or 50 feet of shoreline. And don't believe everything you read in the news that day*!
*Except for the StethoSCOOP of course.
