Kentucky: Newest State in the Nurse Compact

June 1st, 2007 - Kentucky implemented NLC

Kentucky is the newest state joining the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). The first participating states, Maryland, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin formally began implementation of the RN and LPN/VN compact in January, 2000. In response to the ongoing nursing shortage, the Compact has as one of its goals to “remove regulatory barriers to increase access to safe nursing care.” In short, these states legally recognize one another's out-of-state nursing licenses to allow additional nurse availability in their states.

Similar to recognition between states of state-held driver’s licenses, the mutual recognition model of nurse licensure allows a nurse to have one license in the state of residency and to practice in other states, in accordance to each state's practice law and regulation. To achieve mutual recognition, each state must enact legislation and regulation authorizing the Nurse Licensure Compact, as well as adopting administrative practices for implementation.

Kentucky New Compact StateMember states are referred to as “Compact” states and currently total twenty-one – all recognizing one another’s state-issued nurse licensures. Current members include: Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Colorado is scheduled to implement the compact on October 1st, 2007.

The definitive answer to all license regulations should be secured through the state board of nursing in which a facility is located. To be certain that you are complying with State regulations, your first step should ALWAYS be to consult the Board of Nursing in the state in which a client facility is located. If a State is a member of the Nurse License Compact, you may want to access the National Board of Nursing site for more complete information.

The Compact opens up a number if opportunities for RNs and LPN/VNs both in contract and travel positions. To explore opportunities that may be available for you, email gotravel@favoritestaffing.com or visit our job search page to view the many available positions in the compact member states.

Travel to New Jersey

Destination Spotlight: New Jersey, more than just the Garden State

Atlantic CityThis month’s Destination Spotlight features New Jersey…not because last week marked the final episode of the Sopranos, but because we have tons of travel and per diem opportunities with great pay rates. Summer also happens to one of the best times to visit the Garden State.

We’ll begin with Jersey Shore. If you’re in the mood for a little gambling, head to Atlantic City— Las Vegas of the Northeast.  You'll find funnel cakes, hot dogs, souvenirs, and candy shops; not to mention the eleven resort-casinos featuring cabaret acts, stand-up, concerts and the amazing Cirque de Soleil. In fact, Atlantic City is as well-known for its exciting night clubs and entertainment as the traditional seashore amusements.

AvalonAnother day, head half an hour south to the picturesque town of Avalon. Escape here for a little rest and relaxation and take in the natural dunes and gentle surf. Other beach towns not to be missed are Asbury Park, Bay Head, and Bradley Beach, home to some of the best surfing in New Jersey.

For those who have an artistic side, head for Belmar and enter their 2007 Sandcastle Contest held on July 18th. Also don’t forget New York City is only an hour away! So grab your sunscreen and call our North Jersey branch office at 800-557-0189 or email northjersey@favoritestaffing.com. Travelers can email gotravel@favoritestaffing.com or call Travel Nurses Services at 800-755-1411

Fun in the Sun with the Family

Summer gas prices got you grounded? Here are some ideas for fun in the sun close to home.

Summertime Family FunCamp at a local park!  With a little research you can find a state or city park that allows camping; and you’ll be close to home if it rains.

Plan a weekly or monthly Family Adventure Night. Give your children a list and let them take turns picking the activity. Play tag at the park, go to the movies, go miniature golfing or go-kart riding, eat at a “theme” restaurant.

Have an old fashioned picnic!  Prepare sandwiches and snacks, grab the kids, dogs. and Frisbees. Find a pretty spot and relax in the sun. Don’t forget the bug spray!

Discover your city. Visit local museums, zoos, nature trails, etc. Plan a Scavenger Walk!  Write down five items (butterfly, cat, rosebush, etc.) for each family member and walk through the neighborhood or a park and discover your items. The winner gets to choose a treat to be enjoyed by the whole family.
