Nursing: A Profession and a Passion -- what an outstanding theme for this year’s National Nurses Week!  May 6th through 12th has been set aside this year to recognize and honor the nursing profession. Beginning in 1965, Florence Nightingale’s birthday, May 12th, has been celebrated as International National Nurses Day.

Although originally proposed in 1953, it was not until 1974 that a week was formally designated by the White House under President Nixon as National Nurses Week.  Since that time, communities, employers and nurses have taken advantage of this annual timeframe to recognize the nursing profession, as well as to encourage young people to consider a career in nursing.

America’s nurses serve millions of patients every single day. Their dedication to health and wellness, their commitment to patient safety and their compassion for each individual patient they care for is worthy of celebration, not only during Nurses Week, but every day of the year!

Since 1981, nurses have been the foundation of Favorite Healthcare Staffing, although our employee base and services have expanded since that time.  National Nurses Week provides us with a wonderful opportunity to thank all of our nurses and healthcare professionals for choosing a life and career path that truly improves the quality of life for the individuals and the communities they serve.

Favorite Corporate Employee "Takin' It To The Street" for Leukemia

Written by Jenny Noack, Favorite Visual Basic programmer

Favorite Healthcare Staffing has always been committed to giving back to the community.  Over the years, employees at Favorite’s corporate headquarters have raised money for a number of charities, including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Breast Cancer Awareness, local shelters and food banks, and more.  Once again, the Favorite family is rallying in support of one of their own.  Jenny Noack, a computer programmer for Favorite, is training to run a marathon while raising money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  Here is her story:

Brad, currently in remission

For most of my life, I have been a limit-pusher.  For the last year, my goal has been to run a 26-mile marathon.  I was hard-pressed, though, to find the motivation until last October when I learned that my friend, Brad had been diagnosed with leukemia.  Brad, a 30-something regular guy, worked as a pharmacist and spent his weekends riding bicycles with friends.  I was shocked that someone who seemed so young and healthy could be struck with cancer.

When realizing that there was little I could do but offer kind words and prayer, I felt helpless.  Although I knew Brad had the best of care, both at the hospital and at home in the care of his wife, Elaina, I wanted to find something I could do.

That ‘something’ came to me as a postcard about Team in Training and seemed oddly fateful – a program in which I could train to run a marathon while I raised money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  I knew right away that I had to do it.

Jenny, training for the marathon

As Brad endured his journey, I began mine.  Through his bravery, I have been strengthened.  I have run more than 200 miles in preparation for the San Diego Marathon on June 3rd.  There have been miles when my entire body ached, but knew my pain was nothing compared to what Brad experiences.

In this journey, I have discovered that the world is full of good, generous people.  In my goal to raise $6,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, I have seen how our lives are intertwined, and how friends, co-workers, and strangers accept the challenge to support great cause with hope of creating a better future.

Perhaps you, too, can rise to this challenge, in hope that one day we'll have a cure and cancer won’t be such a frightening word.  If the idea of a cure seems too far off, consider this: the medication that is saving Brad’s life today was discovered with research funded by donations from people like you.

In honor of Brad and cancer survivors all over the world, please visit www.tntdonate.com to support the mission of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  Your benevolence is sure to inspire me as I run my first-ever marathon!

Travel Destination: Baltimore, the Charm City

Baltimore is famous for many things including world-famous Chesapeake Bay cuisine, Orioles Baseball, The Preakness Stakes, and Inner Harbor. Let's start there as we explore Charm City.

Inner Harbor is the scenic downtown waterfront area. It's the perfect place to shop a little, eat fabulous crab, listen to street musicians, rent a paddle boat or cruise in the harbor. It's a wonderfully central location within walking distance of many fascinating attractions.

It's only a short walk to the Baltimore Aquarium where you can choose to be surrounded by glass walls of filled with fish or step out to the open ocean exhibit. If you've never seen bearded catfish, wolf eels, or stingrays, now's your chance!

Close by is the Maryland Science Center where on Fridays, you can see the Moon, planets, and stars through their historic refracting telescope on the rooftop oberservatory. The center also has an IMAX theater and planetarium.

Now that it's baseball season, just a 12-minute walk will take you to Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Two short blocks from the stadium, you can visit the birthplace of "Babe" Ruth.

Don't forget to visit the charming Baltimore neighborhoods nestled around the Inner Harbor. Dine at one of the many Italian restaurants in Little Italy or enjoy their outdoor movies and bocce ball courts throughout the summer. For the feel of an old English neighborhood complete with cobblestone streets and pubs, you won't want to miss visiting Fells Point in the oldest section of Baltimore.

Listed by Frommer's in the top 10 of the 2005 summer destinations, Baltimore is definitely a destination not to be misssed!

Remember that Maryland is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact, which makes it easy for you to work in Baltimore if you're licensed in one of the Compact States. Maryland Crab Cakes

The secret to this recipe is using the finest Jumbo lump crabmeat from Maryland. Tender and sweet, the flavor is worth the price. These crab cakes are exceptional as a main course or appetizer, try them with a nice dry white wine. Pure seafood heaven!

Serves 4

  • 1 lb jumbo lump crabmeat
  • 2/3 cup dry plain breadcrumbs
  • 2 tsp seafood seasoning
  • 1/3 cup finely diced red pepper
  • 1/4 cup finely sliced scallion, cut on the diagonal
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped parsley
  • freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 TB mayonnaise
  • 1 egg plus 1 egg white
  • peanut oil for frying
  • Tartar Sauce
  • lemon wedges

In a large bowl, break out crabmeat into slightly smaller pieces, feeling through mixture to make sure no shell pieces remain. In another bowl, combine breadcrumbs, seasoning, red pepper, scallion, parsley and black pepper. Add to crab, then stir in mayonnaise, egg and egg white. Blend well and gently form into patties. (Mixture will make 8–9 large or 10–12 small patties.). Flatten patties, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes or until ready to fry (they can be prepared the night before). Heat 1/2 inch of oil in a heavy skillet over medium heat and fry for 2–3 on each side, turning gently, until golden brown. Serve with lemon wedges and tartar sauce.

The Newsletter Staff reviews recent movie releases

Disturbia (PG-13)
"Disturbia”, a modern, youthful version of “Rear Window,” concerns a troubled but decent young man named Kale, who is sentenced to house arrest and left with nothing better to do than spy on the neighbors. Kale and his friends, Ashley and Ronnie, discover sinister goings on in their quiet neighborhood.  There are no big surprises, but the jumps and jolts are well timed and the overall mood is at once grisly and good-natured — more diverting than disturbing.
Our Score: (3 out of 4 Stethoscopes)

Meet the Robinsons (G)
Based on the book A Day with Wilbur Robinson by William Joyce, this movie is about Lewis, an orphan and genius inventor.  Lewis is concerned both about finding a family of his own and learning the identity of his mother and why she gave him up. After meeting the mysterious Wilbur Robinson, Lewis is flung into the future in Robinson’s Time Machine. This movie will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy.
Our Score: (3.5 out of 4 Stethoscopes)

Blades of Glory (PG-13)
After fighting over tying for American gold for solo skating at the world championships, Chazz and Jimmy are banned from Championship Skating. However, a loophole in the rules gives them a new chance. They can compete again if they switch divisions - to couples. The pair glide toward destiny and mastery of the dangerous skating maneuver - the Iron Lotus. A warning: the film's PG-13 rating is partially due to a "comic violent image.”
Our Score: (2.5 out of 4 Stethoscopes)
