April is Occupational Therapy Month

Favorite Healthcare Staffing salutes Occupational Therapists and Assistants for their commitment to excellence

Approximately 117,000 Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants are licensed to practice in the United States and Puerto Rico. Favorite offers a number of great assignments for these professionals, so if you know an Occupational Therapist, send them to Favorite and you’ll earn a referral bonus!

Occupational Therapists teach people how to perform the skills necessary for the job of "living." Nearly one third of people employed in the profession of occupational therapy work with children, helping them master the "occupations" of childhood - learning, playing and growing. Handwriting problems are a leading reason schoolchildren are referred to Occupational Therapists.

Occupational therapy services are delivered in a variety of settings such as schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing and assisted living facilities, and mental health clinics.

Travel to our Nation's Capital

Written by Kerry Pitt-Hart, a member of the Favorite Newsletter Staff and a Travel Nurse Services Project Coordinator

Beyond all the neoclassical government buildings, monuments, memorials, and public figures, Washington, DC is a city of colorful and diverse neighborhoods, filled with hip boutiques and galleries, historic homes and small museums, and urban parks.

Neighborhoods are ideal for walking and almost all are accessible by Metro, making DC one of the easiest cities to navigate and a terrific city for touring, once you understand that numbered streets run north and south, and lettered streets run east and west.

I lived in the Woodley Park / Cleveland Park neighborhood…directly across from the National Zoo, and would often cross the avenue to visit the Bird House and the outdoor flight cage, and see the giant pandas…though they always seemed to be hiding out in their den.

This part of town, like most other neighborhoods, has wonderful restaurants. Since it’s been awhile, I was curious to see if some of my favorite haunts were still in business, especially given how market-driven the restaurant industry is. I was not surprised that one of my favorite Indonesian restaurants - Ivy’s Place - is still tucked into its present location on the corner of Connecticut and Porter Street (a few doors down from my first apartment). Across the street is Vace Delicatessen – still the best pizza I’ve ever tasted. Is it lunch yet? Then there is Petitto's near the Woodley Park Metro. I couldn’t afford to eat in the dining room, but had dessert downstairs in the wine cellar. Mmmm. Dark chocolate mousse with fresh raspberry sauce.

Within walking distance is Adams Morgan – the multicultural hub of the city known for its restaurants, nightclubs and bars, and colorful mural art. The Parisian artist Toulouse-Lautrec's portrait is shown in the picture below. Still the gritty, diverse and funky place I remember, it’s home to Heaven and Hell. Both share the same address and phone number, with Heaven being three floors up and Hell predictably located in a dark, noisy basement bar where “the greatest sins are to wear earth tones and seem boring.”

So that you don’t think all I do is eat and drink, I was in school at the time, so in between classes, I spent a lot of time in Dupont Circle where I interned at an art gallery. Dupont Circle was and still is Washington’s leading neighborhood for art. I also spent a lot of time at the National Mall, visited the Lincoln Memorial…lost count how many times, took sculpture classes at The Smithsonian, spent countless hours in The National Gallery, The Phillips Collection (America’s first museum of modern art), and long afternoons at the Hirshhorn’s Sculpture Garden.

My favorite time of year in DC is right about now with the blooming of the cherry trees around the Tidal Basin. Since every year is different, I checked and peak bloom is occurring right now. To celebrate this beautiful springtime event, the Cherry Blossom Festival is scheduled through April 15.

If this has piqued your interest, we have two branches in Maryland. For per diem assignments, call our local office in Silver Spring - less than 10 miles from DC - at 800-848-1592 or call Baltimore at 800-951-8767. We also have travel opportunities, so please email gotravel@favoritestaffing.com or call Travel Nurses Services at 800-755-1411.

Fax your timecard for prompt pay!

By faxing your timecard to 1-866-FAV-PAYS, you can speed up the payroll process

Weekly, or after each shift, you can fax your completed "Employee Assignment Record" (timecard) to 1-866-FAV-PAYS (1-866-328-7298). After faxing your timecard, you can verify that it was received by calling 1-877-215-7999 with the unique identifying number located at the bottom of your timecard.

The following tips will help ensure timely pay.

  • Use a new timecard after each fax. You may use the same timecard for up to four shifts, but once you fax it to Favorite Healthcare Staffing, you must use a new one.
  • Download new timecards from our website. Go to www.favoritestaffing.com and log in. Go the payroll area and click on Printable Timecard.
  • When filling out your timecard, print clearly.
  • Fill in circles (bubbles) completely.
  • Remember, the "date worked" is always the beginning of the shift.
  • Bubble in the day of the week worked - the day and the date must match.
  • Always bubble in the "area" worked: General Staff or Specialty.
  • Always bubble in the "shift" worked: Day, Evening or Night.
  • It is also very important that your social security number is in the space provided. Avoid touching the numbers to the sides of the boxes.
  • Self-booked shifts will result in the inability to process your record timely. You must call Favorite Healthcare Staffing before working a self-booked shift.

Complete instructions are on the back of each form. If you have any questions, contact your local branch office.

TB and Tuberculin Skin Testing

TB Facts
In total, 14,097 TB cases were reported in the United States in 2005. This represents a 3.8% decline in the rate from 2004. The 2005 TB rate was the lowest recorded since national reporting began in 1953 (2006 rates aren’t yet published).  The TB rate is going down in the United States. But, the decrease in the percent change of the annual case rate has slowed, from an annual average of 5.6% for 1993 through 2002 to an average of 3.1% for 2003 through 2005. TB testing is still crucial for monitoring and maintaining the steady decline of reported cases.

Tuberculin Skin Testing-What is it?
The Mantoux tuberculin skin test (TST) is the standard method of determining whether a person is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis.  It is performed by injecting tuberculin purified protein derivative (PPD) into the inner surface of the forearm.  The TB test reaction should be read between 48 and 72 hours.

Who can receive a TST?
Most persons can receive a TST.  TST is discouraged only for persons who have had a severe reaction to a previous TST.  It is not contraindicated for any other persons including infants, children, pregnant women or persons who have been vaccinated with BCG (TB vaccine).

Favorite’s Requirements
A TB skin test is required upon hire and annually thereafter.  If you have had a positive TB skin test or if your healthcare provider has recommended you not have the skin test, then we require a recent clear chest x-ray and the completion of our brief TB Questionnaire.  This Questionnaire is available through your local branch, travel or national accounts departments.

Be proactive and keep current with your TB skin test.

Facts above and additional information is available through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). www.cdc.gov
