One of the advantages of working for Favorite Nurses is the full-time benefits. Favorite Nurses is committed to the ongoing education of our employees and provides Continuing Education Unit (CEU) Reimbursements up to $100 per calendar year per employee. A certificate of successful completion of the course and documentation of the amount paid for the course must be provided.

That's a lot of money toward gaining your CE contact hours, especially considering the fact that there are numerous online institutions that offer a year's worth of classes for under $30. You can find more information on obtaining CEUs online at:

You may also be eligible to receive reimbursement toward ACLS certification. Be sure and ask your branch representative.

Fireworks Safety

Fireworks can be loads of fun, but only if they're handled properly.

Fireworks SafetyIf you plan on launching some of your own fireworks this Fourth of July, keep the following safety precautions in mind to ensure a safe, fun holiday.

  • Always read and follow label directions.
  • Have an adult present.
  • Buy from reliable sellers.
  • Use outdoors only.
  • Always have water handy (a garden hose and a bucket).
  • Never experiment or make your own fireworks.
  • Light only one firework at a time.
  • Never re-light a "dud" firework (wait 15 to 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water).
  • Never give fireworks to small children.
  • If you must store your fireworks, keep them in a cool, dry place.
  • Dispose of fireworks properly by soaking them in water and then placing them in your trashcan.
  • Never throw or point fireworks at other people.
  • Never carry fireworks in your pocket.
  • Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.
  • The shooter should always wear eye protection and never have any part of the body over the firework.

Favorite Flicks

The StethoSCOOP Newsletter staff reviews recent movie releases.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (Rated PG) is a sentimental chronicle of four 16-year-old best friends' eventful summer apart. It mixes bits of fun, tears, romance and life lessons into a pleasing package. Adapted from Ann Brashares' popular series of juvenile fiction, the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is a good movie for any young girl and any woman who remembers what it was like to be 16.
Our score:
(3 out of 4 stethoscopes)

Batman Begins (Rated PG-13) is the story of the Dark Knight rather than the Caped Crusader. It details Bruce Wayne’s evolution into Batman, played perfectly by Christian Bale. Brooding and dark, Batman Begins is more than just another superhero movie.
Our score:
(3.5 out of 4 stethoscopes)

Herbie: Fully Loaded (Rated G) is a classic family film updated for a modern audience. While you won't necessarily find yourself pondering deep thoughts, this film has something few films offer today: an opportunity for the whole family to go to the movie theater and walk out with a smile on their faces.
Our score:
(2 out of 4 stethoscopes)

Independence Day Recipe

Try this fresh, flavorful alternative to the traditional BBQ!

Swordfish Kabobs with Fresh Lime Sauce

Ingredients:
1 pound swordfish or tuna steaks, cut into 2 x 1 x 1-inch pieces
1/2 pound large shrimp, shelled, deveined, tails left on
1 large green bell pepper (8 ounces), stem, core and seeds removed, cut into 8 wedges
8 to 12 cherry tomatoes, stems removed
3 medium-size white onions (1 pound), peeled and ends removed, quartered
8 to 12 small mushrooms
1/2 fresh pineapple, peeled, cored, cut into 1-1/2 x 1-1/2-inch cubes (about 2 cups). Save rind
1/4 cup freshly-squeezed lime juice
4 tablespoons olive oil, divided
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon minced garlic (1 medium-size clove)
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon coarsely-ground black pepper, or to taste

Instructions:
Place fish, shrimp, bell pepper, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms and pineapple in a shallow dish. Squeeze juice from pineapple rind (about 3 tablespoons) into small bowl. Add lime juice, 2 tablespoons olive oil, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, ginger and black pepper. Mix well; pour over fish, vegetables and pineapple. Cover; marinate at room temperature 30 minutes. Assemble kabobs by alternating fish, shrimp, vegetables and pineapple on metal skewers (or wooden skewers that have been pre-soaked in water). Grill 4 to 5 inches from medium-hot coals or under broiler until desired doneness, about 4 minutes per side, basting frequently with remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil.

Yield: 4 large or 8 medium kabobs, enough for 4 main-dish servings
