Nursing
Assistants: Caring is My Career

National Nursing Assistants Week
is June 9-16, 2005.
Every day over 2
million nursing assistants give hands-on care
to the frail, elderly, disabled, or chronically
challenged, enhancing the feeling of security
for our aging or disabled loved ones. Compassionate
care is provided in nursing homes, assisted
living communities, personal homes, and a variety
of other settings.
The National Network of Career Nursing Assistants, a professional
organization, was established in 1977. This
year marks their 28th anniversary of celebrating
NAs who bring wisdom, patience, humor, and
compassion to the daily lives of patients.
For more information on National Nursing Assistants Week or NNCNA
membership, visit www.cna-network.org.

Remembering
Dad

In honor
of Father's Day, June 19th, our
readers share stories of the dads,
stepdads and granddads that made
a difference in their lives.
"Father's Day is
approaching and I would like to take the moment to remember my father
for always being there when
us kids were growing up! I never realized how
blessed I was until I got older and became
more aware of all the broken families that
there really are around us! I feel that my
father and mother were committed to each other
and us kids and that they did the best job
possible raising us considering that there
was only a one person income. My mother stayed
home and raised the family! Today, all four
kids have graduated from college and make it on
their own! Thanks for caring!"

"I
was about 8 years old when my dad came into
my life. The term 'stepfather' has never
been adopted, as it does not communicate
what my daddy means to me. As a child growing
up, I would always very proudly tell everyone
that my dad could fix anything! Any
broken object would be rushed to my dad for
his
attention. Over the years he repaired many
toys,
bicycles, radios, etc. His skill in fixing
things was
not limited to inanimate objects. Many times
I found
myself with a broken spirit and much to my
surprise,
my dad also possessed expertise in fixing any
challenge that might slow me down. I am now
married
and have started my own home, but I can still
count on
my dad for his repair skills and general expertise.
I am also completing my Masters Degree in Health
Services Administration and working as a nurse per
diem with Favorite Staffing. My success today would not
have been possible without that day 22 years ago, when
my dad came into our lives."

"I lost
my father in 1996 but the one thing I've
always remembered is this: When
I was in first grade, my mom had disc surgery and was unable to get out of bed
for few days. My father, [who is] ex-military, got us ready for school. That
day was first grade pictures. He not only
ironed my dress but put my long hair into ponytails
(slightly uneven ones) and made
my
lunch - a peanut butter and jelly sandwich,
which became my ultimate favorite sandwich.
My dad was very quiet but loving. For him
to do the above was so out of character, but
it was the best memory I can remember and my
picture came out wonderful. After that, we
did something every month that was just me
and Dad, whether it was playing
with
my Barbies or Atlantic City as I grew up."

"My dad passed away in 2000. I think of him often, but especially
when I'm doing something he taught me to do.
He had three daughters and one son. He taught
each of us how to mow grass, use tools, change
the oil in our cars, drive tractors, fish,
tend the garden, trim trees and make popcorn
and scrambled pancakes.
His goal as a father was to teach us to be
self-sufficient and be prepared to take care
of ourselves when we left home. He was a strict
man and money was not always there for new
things. I learned from both my parents how
to make do with what Dad could
provide, but I never went without food, clothes
or an education. Thank you Dad for being strict
and keeping me safe and for teaching me to
do the things I can do. I miss you."

"I have the
most unique memories of my Grandpa. We were migrant
workers to Terry, Montana. Every
summer we would work long, hard days in the sugar
beets. I was young and would help my grandpa
finish
his rows. He would reward me by making a pit
stop
after our long day and buy me an ice cream cone
- a
large strawberry cone for his little helper.
The rest
of the family would grinch and wait in the van
while
he purchased his little girl a cone. He worked
hard
all year long; he sold watermelons during the
seasons
and would give me first choice to any melon.
Needless to say, I never went
for too long without him spoiling me. I miss
him. Even as an adult, I wish he was still around
to spoil
me every now and then. He would be so proud of
me
right now."
