Tips
to Help You Float Along
Floating
from unit to unit continues to be a way of life for all
nurses, not just those who work for agencies.
 As
a Favorite Nurse you may be asked to float to like areas based
on your work
areas upon arrival to your assignment. Here are some tips to help
you float along:
Introduce
yourself – Make sure you meet the charge nurse
or resource person as well as the rest of the staff and that you’re
clear about your role.
Be clear about your assignment – Every unit
has idiosyncrasies and expectations. Ask what you are expected
to do as part of
your routine.
Make those patients “yours” for the day - As agency
nurses, we are used to jumping in and becoming part of the unit. Always think
of your handling of patients and their families as the way you would want your
own family to be treated.
Be clear about your limitations – If you are unsure
and uncomfortable about a procedure, don’t take chances. Let your
supervisor know that assistance is needed.
Ask
questions – If you don’t
understand, ALWAYS ask! Patient care and safety always come
first.
