Virginia Joins Nurse Licensure Compact

Virginia implements compact to allow nurses from other states to practice there without obtaining a Virginia license.

The Virginia Board of Nursing rang in the New Year by implementing the Nurse Licensure Compact, the agreement that allows nurses to be licensed in one state - their state of residency - and practice in another.

On January 1, a year after passing legislation, Virginia became the 18th state to implement the compact, which grants multi-state privileges to nurses on the condition that they comply with the laws and regulations of the state in which they're giving care. Created by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) in 1997, the Nurse Licensure Compact is designed to ease some of the barriers of providing safe nursing care across state borders.

The states currently participating in the compact include: Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin.

For more information on the Nurse Licensure Compact, visit the NCBSN or Virginia Board of Nursing websites.

Tax Credits Not to Miss

As you begin to file your 2004 taxes, be sure to check your eligibility on a number of tax credits.

Tax Credits Not to MissRetirement Tax Credit - Depending on your income level, you might qualify for a tax credit of up 50% of your first $2000 in retirement contributions, such as that to a 401(k) or IRA accont. The maximum amount of this credit is $1000. The credit is called "Credit for Qualified Retirement Savings Contributions" and IRS Form 8880 can be used to determine your eligibility.

Education Credits - If you, a spouse or a dependent attend an eligible educational institution, you might qualify for either the "Hope Credit" or the "Lifetime Learning Credit". IRS form 8863 can be used to determine if you qualify for either credit.

Child Tax Credit - If you have a qualified child, you could receive a $1000 tax credit for 2004. This is in addition to the credit for child and dependent care expenses and the earned income credit. Read Publication 972 to see if you are eligible.

If you do your own taxes, make sure to take your time and read up on these and other tax issues to ensure that you receive all that is due to you. You can find more information on each of these credits by visiting www.irs.gov.

Don't Let a Blizzard Delay Your Pay!

Enrolling in Direct Deposit or the Payroll Card can ensure that you are paid on pay day, regardless of the weather or mail delivery delays.

Eastern states such as Massachusetts recently received over 3 feet of snow, the fifth largest snowfall to hit the area in recorded weather history. Some residents are still snowed in, and travel in the cities is almost at a standstill. With weather this serious, waiting for your check to arrive in the mail can seem like an eternity, and getting it to the bank almost impossible. However, for those enrolled in Direct Deposit or the Payroll Card, their weekly pay will arrive safely in their bank accounts right when they need it most.

When you enroll for Direct Deposit or the Payroll Card, you receive:

  • Electronically credited funds
  • Pay that arrives in your account on the day you're scheduled to be paid
  • Funds that are immediately available for withdrawal

Don't have a checking or savings account? No problem. The Payroll Card is designed just for you! The Payroll Card allows you to access your pay through ATMs throughout the country. A small fee applies to deposits and withdrawals, but you'll never have to wait by the mailbox or rush your check to the bank again.

To sign up for either of these services and get your money quickly, contact your local branch office.
